Try those small and sour green plums!

If you have been checking out several pages in our web site you may have seen the header that depicts small green plums.  These plums are full of suggestion to the Turkish people since they symbolize the beginning of Spring.  Today, in Istanbul, you will find street vendors with their wooden carts full of these small treats, as well as fresh strawberries and probably cherries.  While the sour taste of the plums may be foreign to our sweet-accustomed tastebuds, the strawberries are sweet and have a flavour just like the wild strawberries you may remember from years past.  The cherries, red and juicy, are equally sweet and have a flavour that has all but disappeared from most of the fruit we buy in Canada.

Enjoy the inexpensive fruit from the street vendors and do try the plums.  They must appeal to some taste-buds or they would not be so prolific!  There are plenty of water fountains where you can wash your fruit.

p.s.  I am now seeing these same sour green plums in our local Iranian grocery stores.
