Thoughts about tourism amidst economic mayhem

Our friends are all reacting differently to the current economic crisis.  Some are “batoning down the hatches” and staying close to home, watching their spending and finding joy in a new focus on family and home.  Others are carrying on much as normal but with a definite tendency to think twice about any purchases that aren’t absolutely necessary (e.g. that daily caffe latte at the local cafe, that trip to the mall, etc.)

Then there are those who have the confidence that all will be well in a year or two and hold the attitude that they are still going to take the trip they planned for 2009 … “after all, you never know what is around the corner.”

If you had planned to take a vacation in 2009, before the economies of the world started to shudder, and you really want to go, try to find a way to make it happen.  In keeping with the times, some people will holiday close to home, others who venture abroad may settle for a slightly lower category hotel, while others will go for a shorter time but maintain a quality aspect.  Then there will be people who will settle for the cheapest deal available.  Whatever route they take, these people will still take a vacation.  And isn’t a vacation just what we all need in times of turmoil?

As Rose Tremain once said, “life is not a dress rehearsal.”
