We all know them. People who dedicate their lives to improving those of others. Some choose to work with organizations that aid women, children, families, and others in need. Rosemary Tramantano, on the other hand, has chosen to work to improve the lives of the many dogs on the streets of Bodrum.

Unlike her earlier years, when this warm, eccentric woman was a Playboy Bunny and advertising executive, Rosemary now chooses to live a quieter, but nonetheless active life in the small Aegean village of Yalikavak, where her daily routines revolve around the lives of the animals she rescues from the streets.

Engaging, and somewhat eccentric, Rosemary is an advocate for street animals. And even when they’re fixed, she continues to work to find good homes for her charges:

“We could neuter 200 animals. We’ve done 125 large dogs and 30 puppies have been homed. If I can’t find homes, they are put back on the street, tagged and fixed.”

Rosemary is not new to animal rescue though, “I used to find dogs on my doorstep in NYC, tied up. We (she and her husband) came to Bodrum on holiday and then brought our three dogs, Charlie, Dina and Thor here to live. I met a lady with a similar love of animals, and we worked with a group to neuter street dogs and to find them homes, or home them.” Now a widow, Rosemary laughs as she jokes that “the only men coming in my house today are four legged and neutered.”

Back on her property, Rosemary turned stables into kennels, put fences up and made an agreement with her local municipality – they pay for neutering and she finds homes for the dogs. “I don’t train the dogs, I simply show people what to do and you (sic) follow through and train the dogs. If you don’t have the time to train your dog, you shouldn’t have one… our objective is to rehome all the dogs on the street.”

What’s next for Rosemary? “I would like to do (sic) a television program – Turkish TV – and get a really nice kennel built, with a learning centre for vets to learn how to handle animals rather than just butcher them. I want to sell my house and buy a farm… “

Final thoughts: I like to be happy. Take one day at a time. People expect life to be easy – it’s not, get over it. Take one day at a time.

I agree.
