Our lawn is going, going … almost gone!
Saturday was a BIG day for me. Steve, J and I dug trenches, built and erected three huge raised boxes with 2×12 fir planks, with 24″ paths between each, and covered the lawn within each with layers of newspaper (the crops will be the best-read in the neighbourhood, as we used months of Globe & Mail and New York Times newspapers!) This is called sheet mulching, apparently. We then covered each box with thick poly sheeting and stapled it to the fir. We figured it would help to start the breakdown of the grass quicker.
Tomorrow, Monday, we will be filling the boxes with compost and then the planting begins. I have bought two boxes of seed potatoes, as I recall my dad telling me that potatoes are a great crop for clearing the soil of weeds etc. (they take over). I have also bought lots of edible flower seeds, herbs, raspberry canes, rhubarb crowns and veggie seeds, as well as three different varieties of tomato plants. Now I have to start my journal … it will be such fun watching my edible garden come to life.
I just learned that the BC Government has launched a program entitled “For each lawn, a garden.” I have not had chance to check it out yet, but I believe the goal is to encourage people to grow food instead of grass.
Sounds good to me!
