Insurance Update on Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption

As travel disruptions continue due to volcanic ash from the Icelandic volcanoes, RBC Insurance® reminds us …

This situation remains volatile.  Flight disruptions due to the volcano continue, and much of what has been relayed in the media demonstrates the volatility of this situation. Both air traffic control authorities and geologists agree:  we must be braced for rapid shutdowns of air services at least through the summer.

Please keep in mind that RBC Travel Insurance provides protection for unforeseen events:

Clients who booked their travel and purchased insurance on or before April 15, 2010, will be considered for coverage under RBC policies should they choose to cancel their trip as a result of this event, provided all other policy terms and conditions are met. To qualify for cancellation benefits, the delay must occur for a period of at least 30% of the length of the trip. Interruption benefits for commercial accommodation and meals are covered up to the maximum amount outlined in the client’s insurance policy.

If the travel insurance was purchased after April 15, 2010, future volcanic eruptions in Iceland interrupting travel would be considered a known event and RBC policies would not cover this.  To further clarify, this limitation applies only to future eruptions of Icelandic volcanoes.
