Christmas Gift Ideas

I have never been a fan of the typical Christmas wreath. So, when I saw a picture in a New York Times magazine of wreaths made with living plants, I had an idea to make my own version: living outdoor art.

First, I called my friend ML to see if she would like to join me and then we bought plants, frames, wire, pins, soil and moss. Then, one cool morning at the end of November we made our pieces of living art. I hung mine inside the outside porch area of the front door (on a wall, not on the door) and ML hung hers under the eaves on a south-facing outside wall. We were very happy with our work … and whenever anybody saw them, they wanted one! We ended up making 6 for friends and family.

Each piece is unique and always has a scented area, usually one of the many versions of thyme. They are fun to make, but take a fair amount of time. My favourite part is selecting which plants to use and, of course, seeing the finished product.
